I have always thought of humanity as, at the very best, being one of the most paradoxical species on this planet. At times we are truly magnificent, at other times incredibly gentle and considerate to life around us, and whatever else we do or do not have as individuals, most of us have the use of a highly cognitive and active brain.
All the more pity then, that all to often, we bypass common sense, decency, and consideration for all other life around us, and even by deliberately lower ourselves into a primeval vat of gluttonous slime
Sounds a bit harsh maybe but look at the facts below-courtesy of World Hunger.org
1/ The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that nearly 870 million people of the 7.1 billion people in the world, or one in eight, were suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2010-2012. Almost all the hungry people, 852 million, live in developing countries, representing 15 percent of the population of developing counties. There are 16 million people undernourished in developed countries (FAO 2012).

3/ The world produces enough food to feed everyone. World agriculture produces 17 percent more calories per person today than it did 30 years ago, despite a 70 percent population increase. This is enough to provide everyone in the world with at least 2,720 kilocalories (kcal) per person per day according to the most recent estimate that we could find (FAO 2002, p.9). The principal problem is that many people in the world do not have sufficient land to grow, or income to purchase, enough food.
4/ According to sites such as eatsfeats.com there are well over 2.000 1,500 registered eating contests, and restaurant challenges/annum if visit such sites you can find out when and where they are, the prize money the rules of each competition or challenge, rankings, winners and a whole host of other goodies.
Spot the problem? I hope so, but if you can’t see what I’m driving at then look at the YouTube clip that sat the head of this post concerning Philadelphia’s annual chicken wing eating competition or the wing bowl competition as it is otherwise known
Here we have a competition described as
hotly contested by some of the “best” eaters in the land. But the Wing Bowl is so much more than a spectator sport – it’s a night of debauchery.
and, as one attendee terms it
“Totally debauched, right?” Nick doesn’t even try to hide his glee. “It’s like Hell on Earth.”
It is a wonderful report in some ways as it has a surrealistic flavour all of its own with vivid descriptions of 5 am drunkenness, voracious gluttony, debauchery, lechery, stripper flanking escorts, and; just in case the attendees of this “event” should still be feeling a trifle peckish, all day breakfasts at the local strip clubs
Call me old fashioned, call me what you will, but after so many years of human residency on this planet, what is going on. I like having a good time as much as anyone, and, albeit metaphorically nowadays, I like to let my hair doWn with the best of them, but is this really an event to be proud of, and though the winner pockets wins $22,000, a medal, and a championship ring, is this something any of us would be proud to have imprinted within our minds?
I am glad to report that I am wholly out of touch with events such as these, and that I have no desire to gain any closer acquaintance, but if this is best that some of us can do as a species, then, in my humble opinion, God help us all
I could be wrong however, so, as ever please feel free to express your views
